Philadelphia Gives Boy Scouts Ultimatum

The Boy Scouts have been renting the space from the City of Philadelphia for $1 per year since 1928. (Perhaps it’s the lawyer in me, but I wonder if there is a long-term lease invloved.) Seven years ago the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the Scouts had the authority to control their membership, including the exclusion of gays and communists from employment in their organization. Now, the City of Philadelphia, going against the supreme law of the land, is forcing the third-largest Scouts chapter to decide whether they will adhere to its charter or forsake it in favor of a few pieces of gold.

The ironically (or perhaps aptly) named, City of Brotherly Love is now forcing the Scouts to choose between their charter with the national organization or an exceptionally advantageous lease. The local chapter serves the needs of inner-city children, some 64,000 of them, providing mentoring and after-school programs and providing direction for youths. That may all have to be scaled back if the Scouts are forced out of their home to find other, more expensive digs.

As Dennis Prager asks, “What elevating, inspiring institutions has the Left built for kids? Can you name any?” The Left is doing everything they can to destroy one of the most successful and positive organizations for young men that has ever been conceived. I am at a loss to answer Mr. Prager’s question. I can think of none.

National Right to Life Abandons Life Amendment

By endorsing Fred Thompson, the National Right to Life Committee is the latest to betray the Christian Right. At a time when Mike Huckabee, the only truly committed and consistent friend to life, is tracking down Romney in the polls in Iowa. According to Huckabee, For those of us for whom this is a moral question, you can’t simply have 50 different versions of what’s right,” he said in an interview on “Fox News Sunday.” This argument sounds very similar to one espoused on this very blog.

“It’s the logic of the Civil War,” Huckabee said Sunday, comparing abortion rights to slavery. “If morality is the point here, and if it’s right or wrong, not just a political question, then you can’t have 50 different versions of what’s right and what’s wrong.” Why has the National Right to Life Committee suddenly forgotten this point?

Hate Crimes Up 8%

The FBI reports that hate crimes went up eight percent last year. Like many affirmative action programs I’ve never seen the logic in hate crime legislation. Rather than looking to the crime itself or even the state of mind (mens rea; which is different than motive) at the time of the crime, this legislation calls upon prosecutors (subjectively) to determine the motive behind the crime. By doing this legislatures are necessarily favoring certain victims over other victims. For example, if person one of race A shoots and kills person two of race A the crime will not be seen as serious or heinous as if person one of race A shoots and kills person two of race B. In the end, under hate crime legislation person A will be exposed to a higher penalty in the second hypothetical because his victim was of a different race. The second person’s life will inherently be assessed more value by society.

This goes against the purposes of hate crime legislation and affirmative action programs, to treat everyone equally. Rather, race has become THE issue in these cases, determining whether someone gets an extra point in the application process to law school (See, Grutter v. Bollinger) or whether an individual stays in prison for several more years. Individuals should be assessed on their merits regardless of race when applying to school or when being sentenced. That would foster what proponents of these laws really want (or at least what they should want), true equality.

OUTRAGE ALERT: School Supplies in 2007

I rolled out of bed on Saturday morning, made my coffee and compiled my “to-do” list. Top on said list was the purchase of some poster-board and paints. You see, I was to have a yard sale on Sunday morning.

I arrived at the K-Mart store on Victoria Avenue in the beautiful city of Ventura, California in the late hours of the morning. I made my way past various aisles and eventually arrived at the school supplies aisle. “perfect,” I thought, “this is exactly what I am looking for.” I picked up the poster board, markers, paint and brushes. As I turned to exit the aisle and make my way to the checkout line, I was confronted with the a school supply I can only assume is new for 2007: condoms.

That’s right, directly in front of me, right in the school supply aisle…condoms. I graciously placed the items I had back on the shelf, walked out of the store and drove to Target to purchase my yard sale materials.

Is this where we are? This is where we have come to, condoms thoughtlessly (at best) placed in an aisle frequented by grade school students? Or maybe they were placed there so all those pedophile teachers remember to “cover up” for their after-school activities.

disgusting.

Innocent Until Proven Guilty

This is unbelievable!  Where does an eight or nine year-old child learn such horrible filth?  Watching daddy do it?  Hearing big brother brag about it?  I dunno and maybe I don’t wanna.
