And now, for today’s home electronics news.

For those interested in the next-generation HD format war, it looks like Blu-Ray might have just won it. I hope nobody got an HD-DVD player for Christmas!

This will definitely make me more inclined to shell out $500 for a ps3.

$500???? My limit is under $50 at Target.
It gripes me enough to have to pay for a couple of players per year along with regularly taking the cover off attempting to fix the current one.
I can just see my self paying $500 and week later attempting to clean the thing from a loaded peanut butter sandwich.

Ahhh the vfun of parenthood! I would recommend buying trhe Playstation 3. For a little less than 500 bucks you get a nice videogame system, a CDplayer and a blueray player. And now you can get a remote with it.
I say this but I too can not imagine shelling out 500 bucks for almost anything. And my wife calls me cheap…

You guys and your consoles. Stick with the PC. Not only does it do much more than play games (with better graphics, sound, etc. and an infinitely better control system), most kids will steer clear of it. Even if not, a peanut butter sandwich to the keyboard is no big deal.

PC, shee see, James! Wii rocks. (I don’t yet own one, but it would be my console of choice.)
What about those gaming institutions like Mario and Zelda? You don’t get that on a PC. (Am I betraying my immaturity here?)

Computer games?
I thought you were talking a CD players for movies or music. The last time I played a computer game was pong while I was in college.

It’s called convergence, ltg. Soon we will be able to listen to gangsta rap CDs, play violent & antisocial video games, and watch pornography on the same miraculous device.

Since one can do that on a PC, what are you referring to? I seem to be a bit lost.

ltg, I was referring to the Playstation 3, which, in addition to being a games console can also act as a video player for Blu-Ray hi-def movies. But, it is true that by adding a blu-ray drive, you could do the same on a PC.
The blu-ray capability of the ps3 is what got us all on this video games tangent.

“I was referring to the Playstation 3″
Alright. That makes sense, because they certainly can’t be using the same pc they us for reading this blog because I looked at some of the people who visit this site on the site meter and every last one of them uses stone age graphics.
But going Playstation is really too bad because I’ve very much enjoyed the gamers driving the graphic board prices along with all the other speed products. For instance, my first graphics board, a pepperpro 1280, cost me $3000 and my latest one came as a prize from a box of wheaties cereal.

Well, as games consoles increasingly use the same hardware as PC components, perhaps that same dynamic will be in effect.
Incidentally, when the PS3 first came out they were estimating that its components were costing Sony like $800 meaning they were subsidizing each console to the tune of 3 or 400 each. I think their costs have gone down since then, but still, the PS3 might be the best bang-for-the-buck hardware deal out there. Meanwhile Nintendo is making a profit on every Wii sold.
